Professional Photography Equipment | Canon, DJI, Mercedes | David Lennard

Equipment History

It took me a long time to discover what suits my style of photography and my obsession with capturing every detail perfectly in the field. My commitment is to producing archival quality images that serve society – preserving moments, places, and subjects with absolute precision.

This pursuit demands equipment that performs flawlessly in any condition: from my primary cameras and backup bodies, to the drones that give me new perspectives, to the reliable vehicle that gets me to remote locations, and the rugged camping gear that keeps me comfortable during long shoots in the wilderness.

⚠️ Current Status: Equipment Sold

My professional camera and drone equipment was sold to fund living expenses during the CareHub™ bootstrap phase. This page documents the equipment I used and hope to replace through sponsorship.

If you're interested in sponsoring or know someone who might be, please get in touch.

The Camera

As a photographer, I often create images that are designed to be printed or displayed at very large scale in high resolution. My panoramic vistas are crafted to draw the viewer deeply into the scene, allowing their mind to wander and explore for extended periods. These immersive images have proven particularly valuable in healthcare, aged care, and educational settings, as they have the ability to transform large public spaces.

Canon Heritage

My journey with Canon equipment spans over 25 years, beginning with my first love — their legendary 70-200mm lens paired with an entry-level digital SLR. This relationship with Canon has evolved alongside my photography, leading me to the R5. The R5's sensor represents a significant leap forward, particularly in handling shadow detail — an area where my previous 5D Mark IV sometimes struggled.

Getting the shot requires commitment

Technical Requirements

To achieve the quality and impact I seek, my equipment needs to be up to the challenge of capturing a scene just as nature presents it. Preserving the purity and breadth of the color palette, full tonal range, and sharp focus from foreground to horizon requires overcoming significant technical hurdles.

When composing a shot, I have to rapidly account for a variety of factors, including:

  • Extreme lighting conditions
  • Moving subjects
  • Vast distances
  • Potentially hazardous wildlife
  • Uneven terrain

Shooting Style

Around 95% of my portfolio, including many of the wide-format vistas and 6K video pieces, is captured handheld while on the trail. Most of my images can be a blend of 6 exposures, and so the shutter has to work fast.

The wide-format vistas typically consist of 25-100 individual frames stitched together. When I have only seconds to react to changes in lighting, wildlife activity, or other fleeting phenomena, everything needs to function flawlessly — especially auto-focus and Image Stability. Canon does that for me.

The combination of my photographic vision and the capabilities of my equipment allows me to create images that transport the viewer and transform the spaces in which they are displayed. This unique blend of artistic intent and technical mastery is the foundation of my work.

Drones have revolutionized my ability to capture perspectives that were previously impossible or extremely difficult to achieve. They give me new vantage points for my scenic photography, allowing me to document landscapes from angles that reveal their full majesty.

DJI Inspire 2

The DJI Inspire 2 was my professional aerial platform of choice. With its interchangeable camera system and robust flight capabilities, it delivered cinema-quality footage and high-resolution stills from the air.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro

For more portable aerial work, the Mavic 2 Pro with its Hasselblad camera offered excellent image quality in a compact, travel-friendly package — perfect for hiking into remote locations.

Aerial Photography Benefits

  • Unique perspectives on landscape features
  • Access to otherwise unreachable viewpoints
  • Ability to scout locations before hiking in

Home office editing setup

As a professional photographer specializing in archival quality scenic photography, my monitor is an essential tool in my creative workflow. The 32" ASUS professional monitor serves as an ideal companion for processing high-resolution imagery, expertly handling the wide color gamut and nuanced tonal range captured by my camera's sensor.

Color Workflow

I shoot RAW format in Adobe RGB, and post-process in the ProPhoto color space, where I refine each image until it's ready for specific output:

  • Converting to CMYK for print proofing
  • Converting to sRGB for web and digital platform presentations

With exceptional color accuracy, seamless color mode transitions, and straightforward calibration, this monitor enables me to work with the precision and detail that I require.

ND Filter System

Neutral density filters are essential for controlling exposure in bright conditions and achieving motion blur effects in landscapes — particularly for water features and clouds.

Really Right Stuff Panoramic Head

For my multi-frame panoramic work (25-100 frames stitched together), a precision panoramic head ensures perfect alignment and minimal parallax error between frames. Really Right Stuff is the gold standard for this type of work.

Jackery Backup Power

Extended field work requires reliable backup power solutions. Jackery portable power stations keep my camera batteries charged and laptops running during multi-day shoots in remote locations.

Mercedes

With over 15 years of experience as a Mercedes customer, I have come to rely on the exceptional performance and reliability of their vehicles in my professional work, both on and off road.

Just as my cameras must capture the perfect shot in often unpredictable conditions, my vehicle must start flawlessly and perform exceptionally every time I turn the key. Mercedes has never let me down, allowing me to focus entirely on my craft without worrying about transportation.

Safety in Remote Locations

In an emergency situation, even without cellphone signal, there's an SOS button I can depress for immediate assistance. Whenever I arrive at a wilderness location, I press the button to check coverage. Stuff can happen, and this is a good insurance policy.

Field Readiness

A run through the detailing shop after an off-road adventure brings it back into showroom condition. Most recently, the 400GLE has been an indispensable partner in capturing the raw beauty of nature in some of the most challenging environments imaginable. The vehicle hasn't failed once.

The only modification I made was changing out the OEM Pirelli tires to Nitto All Terrains for better traction in mud and sand. The high specification interior and accessories makes this vehicle a joy to work from, drive, and occasionally camp out in while on location.
