Cancer Care Hub

Mission

We aim to shed light on the critical needs of cancer patients and their caregivers, advocating for a more holistic, compassionate approach to treatment that recognizes the entire human experience of living with cancer.

Together, we can use technology and community to offer global resources, start conversations, share inspirational stories, challenge existing systems, and create a meaningful support network that acknowledges the full spectrum of challenges faced by those touched by cancer - including ways to have fun.

Personal Journey and Motivation

As a cancer patient, I've experienced firsthand the profound challenges of navigating a healthcare system that often overlooks clinical and mental health support. The journey through cancer treatment is not just a physical battle, but an emotional and psychological marathon that demands comprehensive care and true grit. I want to change this by stimulating discussion for reform.

Identifying the Critical Gap

Seeking conversations with other multiple myeloma patients revealed a stark reality: while the internet is saturated with information and millions of cancer patients have unique stories, a critical link was missing. We lack a central repository of information spanning the 200+ cancer types and a dedicated forum where patients and caregivers can connect securely within the Web 2.0 space.

Founding the Hub

In March 2024, I founded the Cancer Care Hub after running Twitter spaces that explored the urgent requirements of the cancer community. Our focus crystallized around critical needs: mental health support, resources for identifying early warning signs, screening processes, group chat platforms, and addressing basic needs for those who slip through the cracks in the healthcare system.

Meeting Minutes

Detailed minutes from our Twitter Space and Discord meetings can be found on the Tezos blockchain in PDF format here.

Note: I'm running a bit behind in publishing the latest Minutes. Essentially the outcome is presented on this webpage. Updates will be made available as soon as possible to ensure transparency and keep our community informed of ongoing discussions and developments.

Celebrating Patient Resilience

In my journey through the social media landscape of cancer support, I've encountered extraordinary warriors whose challenges would seem insurmountable to most. Their strength, resilience, and unwavering positivity inspire me daily. I am committed to shining a spotlight on their individual journeys, the innovative workarounds they've developed, and the profound role of purpose in their daily lives. While still under construction, you can read some of their stories under the Warrior tab of this website.

Navigating Social Media Challenges

Social media has emerged as a primary resource for connecting patients and professionals. While Twitter Spaces offer good functionality, the platform's exposure to political toxicity, and global events is unhealthy. Additionally, exposure to individual traits ranging from performative altruism to cognitive dissonance erode trust, create a feeling of devaluation, increase anxiety and are emotionally exhausting.

While it’s important to have a presence on all social media platforms, our current strategy is to create a Facebook group as a gateway to a Web 2 portal, with a user interface focused on the lowest common denominator - deliberately designed for maximum accessibility. A free, private and encrypted voice and video conferencing platform from Jitsi looks like it may be a good alternative to Twitter Spaces.

Platform and Future Development

For the time being, this website and the Tezos blockchain will serve as a repository for progress updates and resources. I will post a link to the Facebook page after familiarizing myself sufficiently well with the latest interface and functionality. Expect an update by January 1, 2025.

Leveraging Technology for Healthcare Transformation

Our mission centers on leveraging cutting-edge technologies to revolutionize cancer care and mental health support. AI and VR technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to reduce emotional and physical trauma.

Clinical studies have demonstrated their remarkable potential in patient rehabilitation. (citation)

I believe the technology has potential to reduce opioid consumption, and dependency. Such an outcome would be revolutionary for patients and society. For the pharmaceutical industry, not so much. My research thus far leads me to believe there may also be potential for Dementia and Alzheimer’s treatment. More information will be posted on the Hub as I discover it.

I am currently in discussions with Arizona Oncology, with a view to running a VR headset clinical trial. Arizona Oncology is America’s largest independent oncology provider, with over 1.5 million patients. I’m looking forward to bringing you an update on that initiative in the weeks to come.

Integrative and Holistic Approach

Recognizing the multifaceted nature of cancer treatment, we are establishing dedicated discussion groups focused on integrative and holistic approaches to health. These groups will provide a platform for patients to explore complementary therapies, nutrition, mental wellness, and alternative treatment strategies that support traditional medical interventions.
